    • This was an interesting read alongside the recent National Theatre celebrations. I have loved JG ever since I screamed at laughter at his wonderful characterisation in Brideshead back in the 80's and in Resnais' Providence where he was a revelation. I have always thought Olivier was a bit of a shit and this rather confirms it. Gielgud was never a saint but at least he comes over as a much more interesting human being: obssessed with acting as a craft, restless for constant improvement, vain, nar [...]

    • An engrossing, if occasionally overwhelming, biography of the great British actor, John Gielgud: Matinee Idol to Movie Star is a minutely researched look at an actor who reigned on stage and screen for most of the 20th century. Overall I enjoyed the book. I'm a long time admirer of John Gielgud and wanted to know a little bit more about him. Despite my interest in the actor, there were times when there seemed almost too much information. Jonathan Croall is a sympathetic biographer, he clearly ad [...]

    • This was a very good book. He was a very talented actor with a long and illustrious career in Hollywood. He was in some of the movies of our time. Being a lot older than me I first saw him in Arthur with Dudley Moore and he was so funny and pithy. He had all the great lines. This is great book about all his movies, he was good in drama and comedy.

    • .Gielgud was one of the 20th century's greatest actors. He was born to a theatrical family and had a privileged upbringing. He lived through almost all of the 20th century and was a theatrical legend for most of that time, diversifying into cinema for his last 30 years. This is a meticulously researched book, worth reading if you are interested in theatre and its most revered exponents.
